How to use the Target GPA Calculator

  1. Enter your current cumulative GPA and the credits it covers.
  2. Enter the cumulative GPA you want and the number of credits you still plan to take.
  3. Read the GPA you need, the best and worst possible outcomes, and the table of what-if results.

The formula

Your future GPA has to make up the difference between where you are and where you want to be:

Needed GPA = (target × total credits − current GPA × completed credits) ÷ remaining credits

Example: a 3.00 GPA after 60 credits and a goal of 3.40 after 120 credits. Needed GPA = (3.40 × 120 − 3.00 × 60) ÷ 60 = 3.80 — roughly an A− average in every remaining course.

How to read the result

  • A number up to your scale’s maximum — the goal is reachable if you average at least that much.
  • “Any” — you are so far ahead that even straight 0.0s would keep you above the target.
  • A number above the maximum — the target is out of reach with the credits you have left. The card shows the best you can finish with; try more credits (if allowed), a lower target, or ask whether retakes replace old grades.

Why the number grows when you have more credits behind you

Each completed credit carries weight. Moving a GPA by 0.1 over 100 credits takes about 11 credits of perfect 4.0s on top of a 3.0 average, so waiting makes goals harder. The table under the result shows where different term averages would put you.

Same goal, different amounts of time left

The earlier you start, the easier a goal is. With a 3.00 GPA over 60 credits and a target of 3.40, the GPA you would need depends on how many credits remain:

Credits still to takeGPA neededReachable on a 4.0 scale?
155.00No — above 4.0
304.20No — above 4.0
603.80Yes
903.67Yes
1203.60Yes

With only 15 or 30 credits left the goal needs more than a perfect 4.0, so it is out of reach; with 120 credits left a 3.60 average is enough. Use the calculator with your own numbers, and compare the table of outcomes to decide how ambitious a target is realistic.

Frequently asked questions

What if the required GPA is above 4.0?

Then the target cannot be reached within the credits you listed. Add more remaining credits, lower the target, or check whether your school replaces retaken grades.

Which credits should I use for “remaining”?

Only the credits you will still take and that count toward GPA. Courses graded pass/fail usually do not count.

Does it work for a 4.3 or 5.0 scale?

Yes — set the “highest GPA on your scale” box. The letter-grade hint only appears for a 4.0 maximum.

Is this the same as the cumulative GPA calculator?

They are two sides of one formula. The cumulative calculator takes grades and gives a GPA; this one takes a GPA goal and tells you the grades you need.
