CGPA to Percentage Calculator

Type your 10-point CGPA and pick the rule your board or university uses. The calculator shows the percentage, the formula it used, and what the same CGPA gives under every other common rule.

How to use the CGPA to Percentage Calculator

  1. Enter your CGPA on the 10-point scale, for example 8.4.
  2. Choose the conversion rule printed on your marksheet or published by your university. If yours is not listed, pick “Custom” and enter the numbers from its formula.
  3. Read the percentage. The table below the result shows the same CGPA under the other rules, so you can see how much the choice matters.

The common conversion rules

There is no single national formula for turning a CGPA into a percentage. Each board or university publishes its own, so the same CGPA can give different percentages:

RuleFormulaCGPA 8.5 givesWhere it comes from
CBSE (Class X CGPA)% = 9.5 × CGPA80.75%CBSE circular · CBSE profile
VTU% = (CGPA − 0.75) × 1077.5%VTU standard formula
JNTU Hyderabad% = (CGPA − 0.5) × 1080%B.Tech regulations (R18)
General 10-point rule% = CGPA × 1085%Used by many universities and as a rule of thumb — check yours

The CBSE rule says that the “overall indicative percentage of marks” equals 9.5 times the CGPA; the VTU and JNTUH formulas come from the universities’ own notifications and regulations. Before you rely on a number, make sure it is the rule of the institution that issued your CGPA.

Worked example: a CGPA of 8.4

With CBSE’s rule: 9.5 × 8.4 = 79.8%. The same CGPA gives:

RuleCalculationPercentage
CBSE9.5 × 8.479.8%
VTU(8.4 − 0.75) × 1076.5%
JNTU Hyderabad(8.4 − 0.5) × 1079%
CGPA × 108.4 × 1084%

The spread is 7.5 percentage points — large enough to matter for a cut-off, which is why the rule printed on your marksheet beats any generic calculator.

For CBSE’s subject-wise grade points the same factor is used: a subject grade point of 8 (marks 71–80, grade B1) corresponds to an indicative 76%. CBSE’s grade points range from 10 (A1, 91–100 marks) down to 4 (D, 33–40 marks).

Which rule should you use?

  1. The one on your marksheet or ordinance. Many universities print the formula on the grade card or publish it in their examination regulations.
  2. The one the recipient asks for. Some employers and admission forms say “percentage as per university norms” — then use your university’s rule. If they just ask for a percentage, state which formula you used.
  3. A conversion letter, if you need one. If your university issues an official equivalence letter or certificate, attach it to applications rather than your own calculation.

Applying abroad? Evaluation services such as WES usually convert your course grades one by one, not your overall percentage — see our guide to converting grades for university applications.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert CGPA to percentage in CBSE?

Multiply the CGPA by 9.5. A CGPA of 8.4 is 79.8%. CBSE’s circulars call this the “overall indicative percentage of marks”.

Is CGPA × 10 correct?

Only if your university says so. Many universities use CGPA × 10, but CBSE, VTU and JNTUH use different formulas, and some universities publish tables instead of formulas.

What is 8.5 CGPA in percentage?

80.75% with CBSE’s ×9.5 rule, 77.5% with the VTU formula, 80% with JNTUH’s formula and 85% with CGPA × 10.

Which formula does my university use?

Look at the back of your grade card, your university’s examination regulations or its website. If you cannot find it, ask your examination section for a written conversion statement.

Can I reverse the formula to get CGPA from a percentage?

Mathematically yes — the percentage to CGPA calculator does that — but the result is only an estimate, because universities define the official conversion in the CGPA-to-percentage direction.

Is my CGPA stored anywhere?

No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser; nothing is uploaded.
