SGPA to CGPA Calculator

Enter the SGPA of each semester and, if your university weights by credits, the credits of each semester. The calculator returns your CGPA to two decimals and shows the exact working.

How to use the SGPA to CGPA Calculator

  1. Add one row per semester with its SGPA.
  2. Enter the credits of each semester if you know them. Without credits the calculator takes a simple average of the SGPAs.
  3. Read the CGPA, the credits counted and, if you picked a rule, an approximate percentage.

How CGPA is calculated from SGPA

Your SGPA is the credit-weighted average of grade points in one semester. The CGPA is the same calculation over all semesters, which is equivalent to weighting each SGPA by that semester’s credits:

CGPA = Σ (SGPA × credits of the semester) ÷ Σ credits

If every semester has the same number of credits, this is just the plain average of the SGPAs.

Worked example

SemesterSGPACreditsSGPA × credits
Semester 18.122178.2
Semester 28.424201.6
Semester 37.924189.6
Semester 48.726226.2
Total96795.6

795.6 ÷ 96 = 8.2875, which is a CGPA of 8.29. The simple average of the four SGPAs would be 8.275 (8.28) — a small difference here, but it grows when credits differ a lot between semesters.

Rounding and special rules

Universities differ in details that a generic calculator cannot know:

  • Rounding. Some round the CGPA to two decimals, some truncate. The result card shows both the rounded value and the full calculation.
  • Failed or repeated courses. Policies vary: some count the failed attempt until it is cleared, others replace it with the new grade.
  • Non-credit courses. Audit, bridge or non-credit subjects are normally excluded from SGPA and CGPA.
  • Odd semesters. If your university calculates CGPA straight from total grade points, it matches the weighted result as long as all courses are included.

To express your CGPA as a percentage, use the CGPA to percentage calculator with your university’s rule.

Frequently asked questions

Is CGPA the average of all SGPAs?

Only when every semester has the same credits. In general CGPA is weighted by credits, so a semester with more credits counts for more.

How do I calculate CGPA for 8 semesters?

Add eight rows, one per semester, enter each SGPA and its credits, and read the CGPA. For a mid-programme CGPA enter only the semesters finished so far.

What if I do not know the credits?

Leave the credits empty. The calculator then uses a simple average, which is exact if all semesters carry the same credits.

Is CGPA the same as GPA?

CGPA is a cumulative GPA, usually on a 10-point scale in India. A US 4.0 GPA is a different scale; a CGPA of 8 is not a 3.2. See the percentage to GPA converter for common methods.

Does the tool save my SGPA values?

No. Everything is calculated in your browser and cleared when you close the page.
