Percentage to CGPA Calculator

Enter your percentage and choose the rule behind your CGPA. You get the CGPA to two decimals and a comparison across the common rules — handy when a form asks for a CGPA but your marksheet shows marks.

How to use the Percentage to CGPA Calculator

  1. Enter your percentage, for example 79.8.
  2. Pick the rule: CBSE divides by 9.5, many universities divide by 10, VTU and JNTUH add a fixed amount after dividing by 10. Choose “Custom” for any other formula.
  3. Use the CGPA shown — or compare it with the other rules in the table before deciding.

The formulas, reversed

Official rules go from CGPA to percentage. Solving them for the CGPA gives:

RuleOfficial directionReversed (what this page uses)
CBSE% = 9.5 × CGPACGPA = % ÷ 9.5
VTU% = (CGPA − 0.75) × 10CGPA = % ÷ 10 + 0.75
JNTU Hyderabad% = (CGPA − 0.5) × 10CGPA = % ÷ 10 + 0.5
General 10-point rule% = CGPA × 10CGPA = % ÷ 10

Example: 79.8% on the CBSE rule is 79.8 ÷ 9.5 = 8.40. The sources for the forward formulas are the CBSE circular, the VTU formula page and the JNTUH B.Tech regulations.

“n/a” means the reversed formula would give a CGPA above 10, so that rule does not apply to such a percentage.

When does converting this way make sense?

Use it when a form asks for a CGPA on a 10-point scale but your institution graded you in marks, for instance for a scholarship or an overseas application. Keep in mind:

  • The reversed number is an estimate — your institution has no official percentage-to-CGPA rule unless it publishes one.
  • Always say which rule you used, for example “converted as percentage ÷ 9.5”.
  • If the receiving institution publishes its own conversion table, use that instead.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert a percentage to CGPA?

Divide by 10 for the general rule, or by 9.5 for CBSE. With VTU or JNTUH rules, divide by 10 and add 0.75 or 0.5 respectively.

What is 75% in CGPA?

About 7.89 on the CBSE rule (75 ÷ 9.5), 8.25 with the VTU formula, 8.0 with the JNTUH formula and 7.5 with a simple ÷ 10.

Which rule is “right”?

The one your institution or the receiving institution specifies. If neither does, dividing by 10 is the simplest and most transparent choice — just state it.

Is the result an official CGPA?

No. Only your institution can issue an official CGPA. This tool gives a transparent estimate for forms and planning.

Does this work for the 4.0 scale?

No, this page is for 10-point CGPA. For a 4.0 scale use the percentage to GPA converter.
