Grade Calculator
List your assignments or grade categories with a score and a weight. You get your current grade, the letter it equals, and the best and worst result still possible if some work is not graded yet.
🔒 Runs in your browser — the numbers you enter are not uploaded or stored. Results are estimates; your school’s own rules decide. Last reviewed: October 2026.
How to use the Grade Calculator
- Write each graded item or category — homework, quizzes, midterm, project, final — and its weight from your syllabus (the weights should add up to 100%).
- Enter your score as a percentage. Leave the score empty for work that has not been graded yet; its weight is shown as “still to come”.
- Read your current grade and letter, and use the table to see how high or low your final grade could end up.
How a weighted grade works
In a weighted course, each category counts for a share of the final grade. The calculator multiplies each score by its weight, adds those up, and divides by the total weight of the work graded so far:
Current grade = Σ (score × weight) ÷ Σ weight of graded items
Example — four items are graded, the 25% final exam is still to come:
| Item | Score | Weight | Score × weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| Homework | 94% | 20% | 18.80 |
| Quizzes | 85% | 15% | 12.75 |
| Midterm exam | 78% | 25% | 19.50 |
| Project | 91% | 15% | 13.65 |
| Total | 75% | 64.70 |
64.70 ÷ 75 × 100 = 86.27% — a B on the usual scale. Because 25% of the course is still open, the final grade can land anywhere between 64.7% (a zero on the final) and 89.7% (a perfect final).
Typical letter-grade cut-offs
| Percentage | Letter | Percentage | Letter |
|---|---|---|---|
| 93–100 | A | 73–76 | C |
| 90–92 | A− | 70–72 | C− |
| 87–89 | B+ | 67–69 | D+ |
| 83–86 | B | 63–66 | D |
| 80–82 | B− | 60–62 | D− |
| 77–79 | C+ | below 60 | F |
These are the cut-offs many US schools use. Your syllabus may be stricter, may not award plus/minus grades, or may round up from the half point — the syllabus always wins. For GPA points, see the GPA calculator.
Points-based and percentage-based courses
If your course is graded in total points instead of weights, there is nothing to weight: divide the points you have earned by the points possible so far. For example, 412 of 450 points is 91.6%. If you are not sure how much is still to come, the final grade calculator answers “what do I need on the exam?” directly.
If your course drops the lowest quiz or homework score, remove that score before you enter your numbers. Extra credit is handled differently from course to course, so ask your instructor before adding it.
Frequently asked questions
What if my weights do not add up to 100%?
The calculator scales the result to the weights you entered and shows a warning. Check your syllabus — a missing category is the usual reason.
How do I enter an item that has not been graded?
Fill in its weight and leave the score empty. It is counted as “still to come” and used for the best-case and worst-case table.
Can I calculate a grade with unequal categories?
Yes — give each category its own weight. For several items in one category (for example five quizzes), average them first or enter the category average.
Is this the grade my instructor will report?
It is a close estimate. Instructors may drop scores, round, curve or add extra credit, so confirm with your syllabus or your course site.
Is my data saved?
No. Everything is calculated in your browser and disappears when you leave the page.
