The 5.0 grading scale
| Score | Grade | Grade point |
|---|---|---|
| 70–100% | A | 5 |
| 60–69% | B | 4 |
| 50–59% | C | 3 |
| 45–49% | D | 2 |
| 40–44% | E | 1 |
| 0–39% | F | 0 |
This is the scale used by most Nigerian universities. Some institutions use slightly different D and E boundaries, so use your own school’s grading table if it differs. The calculator only needs the letter grade and the grade points above.
How GPA and CGPA are calculated
Multiply each course’s grade point by its units to get the total credit points (TCP), then divide by the total number of units (TNU):
GPA = TCP ÷ TNU and CGPA = cumulative TCP ÷ cumulative TNU
Example semester:
| Course | Units | Grade | Grade point | Credit points |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MTH 201 | 3 | A | 5 | 15 |
| CSC 205 | 4 | B | 4 | 16 |
| PHY 203 | 3 | B | 4 | 12 |
| GST 211 | 2 | A | 5 | 10 |
| STA 202 | 3 | C | 3 | 9 |
| Total | 15 | 62 |
GPA = 62 ÷ 15 = 4.13. With a previous CGPA of 3.85 over 72 units (3.85 × 72 = 277.2 credit points), the new CGPA is (277.2 + 62) ÷ 87 = 3.90.
Degree classes by CGPA
| Class of degree | CGPA |
|---|---|
| First Class | 4.50 – 5.00 |
| Second Class Upper (2:1) | 3.50 – 4.49 |
| Second Class Lower (2:2) | 2.40 – 3.49 |
| Third Class | 1.50 – 2.39 |
| Pass | 1.00 – 1.49 |
These are the usual bands — see for instance the programme pages of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. The exact bands and the pass mark can vary, so confirm with your department. A new CGPA is a planning figure until it is confirmed by your school’s results.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate GPA in a Nigerian university?
Multiply each course’s grade point (A = 5 … F = 0) by its units, add the results to get the total credit points and divide by the total units.
How do I calculate CGPA?
Add the credit points and the units of all your semesters so far and divide. Or enter your previous CGPA and total units and add the new semester.
What CGPA is a first class?
Usually 4.50 to 5.00. A second class upper starts at 3.50, a second class lower at 2.40 and a third class at 1.50.
Do carry-over or failed courses count?
Yes — an F earns 0 points but its units still count, so it lowers the GPA until the course is repeated. Rules for replacing grades differ by school.
Is this the same as the 4.0 US scale?
No. The Nigerian scale runs to 5.0. For comparison with a 4.0 scale use an evaluation service; see percentage to GPA.
